Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Intelligence (CI) pursue similar objectives. There are however fundamental elements that differentiate the two concepts. The first steps in the establishment and development of AI concepts, as we know them at present, date back from the first half of the XXth century. The technologies underpinning the CI include the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), the Fuzzy Systems (FS) and the Evolutionary Computation (EC). As to the concepts of sets and fuzzy logic, the theoretical basis thereof was established in 1965 by Lofti A. Zadeh. The fuzzy logic and fuzzy sets, as they are currently known and applied, are the ones that Zadeh proposed. The uses of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Intelligence in the energy field may be found in the studies on the Integration of Production from Renewable Sources (ANN), Integration of Distributed Generation (SF, EV), Prognosis on Electric Power Conversion and Price Thereof (ANN), Electric Power Quality Control (ANN), Improving the stability of electric power systems (ANN, EV). The paper presents the basis of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Intelligence applications, with a special focus being given to the modern problems faced by the current energy systems.
